Otoplasty

Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at improving the shape, position, or size of the ears. This procedure is often used to correct ears that are more prominent than usual (“protruding ears”) or that have congenital deformities or have been damaged due to injury. Although it is most commonly performed on children and adolescents, more and more adults are seeking this procedure to enhance their appearance and boost self-confidence.

Who needs Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is best for those who feel bad about how they look with their ears, especially if these are lopsided, too large or sticking out. Kids who get made fun of at school for their ears are most often early in the line. But adults who did not have the chance to do this before can also think about it for looks or to get the balance of their face better.

How the Procedure Is Performed

Otoplasty generally takes place under local or general anesthetic, depending on age and complexity of the case. During the procedure, surgeon makes small cut behind the ear to reshape cartilage and bring ears closer to head. The cut is placed in an area that remains hidden, and the scars are usually minimal. The operation lasts from 1 to 2 hours and can be done in an outpatient centre without need for staying in hospital.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery Otoplasty

After otoplasty, patient may feel slight pain, swelling and discomfort for a few days. Wearing a special strap around the head helps keep ears in the right position during healing. Most patients return to daily activities within a week. It is important to avoid activities that may damage ears for a few weeks, and follow carefully your doctor’s instructions for post-operative care.

Risks and Possible Complications

Although otoplasty is a relatively safe procedure, like any surgery, it can involve complications. Risks include infection, bleeding, asymmetry between ears, temporary sensitivity, or persistent pain. In very rare cases, a second procedure may be required for further correction. Choosing a qualified and experienced surgeon is key to minimizing these risks.

Psychological and Aesthetic Benefits Otoplasty

In addition to the aesthetic improvement, otoplasty can have a significant psychological impact, especially in children and adolescents. Self-confidence often increases notably once the patient feels their appearance is more balanced and less subject to unwanted attention. For adults, this procedure can be a way to resolve a long-standing concern and to feel more satisfied with their overall appearance.
